*SPORTS AND POVERTY REDUCTION*

By Derek Murusuri

 *Introduction*

1. I am exceedingly humbled and indeed privileged to be given this precious opportunity to help lay the foundations for future sports development, which will be critical for reducing poverty in this great nation with rich natural resources.

+ endowed with most talents than any other East, Central and Southern African nations.

+ A land of talents - sporting taking a lead role.

I am grateful for this rare opportunity to present before you.

In a special way, kindly allow me thank you the TOC Team for the visionary leadership that made you organize this grand event - OLYMPIC DAY 2021 - for the future of Tanzania as a SPORTING giant in our region and Africa if we determined. All things are possible.

 *1. POVERTY:* Common Understanding.

+ Lack of means to satisfy basic material and social needs.

+ A feeling of powerlessness - rich and poor dimension (TCDD/PRSP).

THE BASIC AND PRACTICAL QUESTION: HOW DOES OUR SPORT INCREASE INCOME/CREATE WEALTH AND HELP SUPPLY BASIC NEEDS?

Mbwana Samatta
Akon
Filbert Bayi
Edgar Tenga
Michael Jordan
Tiger Woods
David Beckham

Therefore, sports changes lives - additional  income and a supply of basic needs.

2. SPORTS TRANSFORMATIONS TO CREATE WEALTH

Sports is one of the largest industry with potentials that many African countries, Tanzania included, are yet to EXPLOIT.

CASH COW.

+ Nurture

+ Develop

+ Invest

+ Returns on investment

+ Determination

Though Europe and America have done it, in Africa we have been lacking the confidence to  creatively develop the industry to offer a significant contribution towards:

1. Health - to fight poverty

2. Wealth - poverty reduction

3. Government Tax - to deliver advanced social services.

4. Reputation - land of talents;

5. Attract investments in human and financial capital.

6. Industries - sports products;

7. Merchandise

8. Employment;

9. unification of communities to engage in development projects to fight poverty....mashabiki na vikoba?

 *All the above have a bearing on poverty alleviation.*

 *Mandela is widely quoted saying, “Sport has the power to change the world,”*

 1. “It has the power to inspire.

2. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.

3. It speaks to youth in a language they understand.

4. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.

5. Sports can be utilized to change mindsets than any single politician can ever do. Remember the George Floyd "I CAN'T BREATH CAMPAIGN in US"

6. EDUCATION: Sports offer an education that cannot be found in institutional settings.

7. LIFE SKILLS: It offers valuable life skills that can help many overcome some of the barriers that poverty maintains.

8. VALUES AND CHARACTER:
Sports relays values, builds character - hard working, decisiveness, play/working together, PROBLEM SOLVING - set and attain goals in life.

9. Reduces conflicts, maintains peace hence time for progressive ideas and projects/focus.

 *Many young impoverished children in the US turned to sports and they made it* .

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

1. Review and improve our national sports policy to promote sports.

2. Improve and increase sports infrastructure.

3. Improve sports management and administration at all levels;

4. Introduce undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in sports management,  sports merchandising, sports media, Exercise Science, physical education, Coaching, Officiating and in Sports Psychology.

Conclusion

If China was a poor country in 1965, today it is the second largest world economic powerhouse, with determination, sports in Tanzania can help reduce poverty, create wealth and offer significant contribution to the country's economy. Time to wake up a sleeping giant.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION.
